Are we looking for God? Do we want Him to save us? Do we think we need saving?
We will not look for that which we do not think we need, nor will we will look for that which we do not want/desire.
Who are we looking for? Where do we place our gaze?
To look for God is a movement of the heart – a heart of flesh. Only a heart of flesh is moveable, for a stony heart will not budge.
St John tells us that God loved us first (1 John 4:19). God is the uncreated mover of all creation. He moves first and all that we do is a response to His movement. If our heart is stony we will not budge, except through the prayers of others who know we need that movement toward God and by which God can and will break through, calling us to move – to become moveable by way of His grace.
All our life we do and say many things and yet nothing we do or say means anything until it is done and said for the Lord. This is the movement of the heart that God is calling each one of us to. It is a movement away from selfish desire and a movement toward selfless love – a movement to behold God, the only One who can save us.
This is our saving – to be set free from the chains of our selfish desires – to be moved by the Lord – to let Him mold and shape our hearts into His own.
Lord God, I give you permission to search my heart – to find the places in my heart that are unmovable – to bring your love into that stony place, so that I may be free to move and be moved by You. It is this that I long for in the depths of my being. It is this that I hope for beyond all understanding. It is this that will truly set me free – free to be who you created me to be once and for all. Amen.
